Research

We have partnered with the Queensland Cyber Infrastructure Foundation (QCIF) to develop AI-enabled facial features analysis software to support clinicians conducting FASD assessments.

Current facial assessment methods can be time-consuming and may not adequately account for variations in facial features across different ethnic groups. This project aims to develop a user-friendly tool that assists clinicians to analyse key facial characteristics associated with FASD accurately and consistently.

A key focus is improving the assessment of ethnic variations in the upper lip, palpebral fissures (eye openings) and philtrum, supporting more equitable and culturally responsive diagnostic practices.

By combining UQ's clinical and research expertise with QCIF's strengths in artificial intelligence and software development, this project will deliver an innovative digital solution to improve the efficiency, accessibility and accuracy of assessment and FASD diagnosis.
